Whenever a major honors show draws close, there’s always a clamor for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
- A different innovative game received no nominations that year
- A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
- Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles worldwide and have been for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
