RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of access tunnels leading to the site... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows British leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces participating in this operation for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among a great many British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate militants who threaten our security, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
